The Wales publishing company is a publishing branch of the oldest Czech (and also - due to the history of Central Europe - the oldest CzechoSlovak) bookstore + direct mail order service, specialized on science-fiction + fantasy (active since 1992).
From 1995 the Wales bookstore cooperated for several years in book publishing and wholesale trades with United Fans Inc. (original user of the PoutníkTM logo) and from 1998 started publishing books on its own (at the beginning mostly as a supplement to the books of others publishers the Wales has beeing co-producing like Leonardo, Laser and Classic publishers).
After increasing company publishing staff in 2002 Wales started to raise the numbers of published books from approxi- mated 5 per year up to current 16-24 books by both Czech and translated authors. In the same period the publishing profile of the company in science-fiction focused mainly on military sf (due to the company attitude We publish the books we would like to read ourselves...).
The main load of today´s Wales publishing list are Raymond E. Feist as for fantasy (Czech translations are available mostly within 6-12 months from their release in USA) and Robert E. Heinlein, Larry Niven plus John Ringo as for science fiction.
A lot of attention is also centered on introducing to the Czech readers interesting books by English writing authors, well established in USA and GB, who are still almost unknown here like Kristine K. Rusch or Ann Marston plus promissing young Czech and Slovak sf / fantasy writers (Èervenák, Bílek, Thurnwald).
