According to our history, the Elves and Dragons were the original inhabitants of Midkemia, created by the Greater Gods at the time the planet was created. The DragonLords enslaved both the elves and dragons and used them as they chose. Of the elves, they split into several groups, the two largest being the Moredhel, that chose to believe they were the chosen and would inherit the planet from the DragonLords, and the Eledhil, that served unwillingly.
