Well, originally Kevin wasn't coming back. The bittersweet aspect of Mara's getting everything she wished for to protect her house, but at the price of love, was a plot device Janny and I agreed upon when we finished Servant. But at the end of Mistress, Janny and our editors (mostly Jane Johnson at HarperCollins UK, but also Pat LoBrutto at Doubleday) overulled me and we brought Kevin back.
