The copy-edit phase is two passes. Copy-edited manuscript and galley-proofs (galleys or proofs, both terms are used). I get the CE manusctipt back from the copy editor with all kinds of notes and questions in the margins and corrections from a proof-reader. I agree or disagree and change things back and answer queries. Then the ms is sent back to the publisher who sets type from it. The type is "proofed" and the pages are sent to me for one last go-round looking for typos, making last minute changes, etc. At the same time, they run off the pages for the galleys and send those you. So anyone with an ARC is looking at the same stuff I am when I make my last pass. Sometimes the differences are trivial, and occasionally they can be important, such as when the typesetter drops a page from the book, or gets two paragraphs in reverse order, etc.
