Are the characters someone you want to be?  Or are they simply just characters?

Just characters.

Readers often get odd attachments to characters, which is what the writer wishes to happen if he/she is doing their job correctly. Writers sometimes get attached to their characters--I don't--and it can throw off their ability to tell a convincing story if the writer isn't careful.

But writing a character that is someone you want to be is a pretty adolescent wish-fulfillment fantasy, and rarely makes for good reading.
