So what exactly was the Lifestone?

OK, back to the Tower of Testing. Pug sees all those lines of force, right? Well, on Midkemia, someone gathered them up and tied them into a knot (the Lifestone). If the knot gets cut, everyone dies. But energy can't be destroyed. It can only be changed. So everywhere else, everything is as it was before. Only Midkemia gets fried. If you read what Macros had to say in ADAS, the order of things (large scale) is threatened, but he doesn't say how. Because he doesn't know how, he just knows it is. A "wrongness," if you will. And Macros, more than you guys, is comfortable with not knowing certain things.
