How did you originally develop the world of Midkemia and Empire of the Tsurani?

Midkemia evolved over many years as a very concrete virtual world used for an FRP campaign started when I was in college back in the mid-1970's. Kelewan was much more of a literary device, based in part on the cultures of Asia, with a little Zulu, Aztec tossed in, as well as any bits and pieces that looked "interesting."  The sources are mostly literary, Jack Vance's _Big Planet_, for the low metal, Buroughs _Mars_ books for the native creatures having six legs, etc.  Janny added a lot of "flesh" to the world when we did the Empire series and was 90% responsible for what you see outside the Empire in the chapters where Mara goes to the Thruil.
